A boy with a vision. A group of medieval travelers willing to follow him anywhere. And a hole in the fabric of time that leads straight into the modern world.
Shortly after their arrival, the travelers come to the edge of a busy, multi-lane highway at night. They perceive the blinding headlights and roaring engines as terrifying, metallic beasts. This is not a cute "fish out of water" tale. It's a disorienting journey of desperation.
THE NAVIGATOR: A MEDIEVAL ODYSSEY is Vincent Ward's fever dream of a film, a 1988 New Zealand production that bends history, fantasy, and religious zeal into something hypnotic and deeply strange.
The film asks questions about faith, about how we interpret the inexplicable, about the violence of progress. Few directors have made time travel feel this unsettling, this intimate, this stripped of Hollywood machinery.
