A boy practices stabbing a tree with a knife, rehearsing revenge against the classmates who torment him, in the snow outside a housing block in suburban Stockholm. A girl moves in next door, and she only ever appears after dark.
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008) follows Oskar, a bullied twelve-year-old, as he grows close to Eli, the strange child who has taken the apartment beside his. She walks barefoot in the cold and lives with a man who slips out at night to slaughter strangers. Oskar does not ask many questions. He has found someone who finally listens to him.
Tomas Alfredson directed the film from John Ajvide Lindqvist's own screenplay, adapting his novel. The Swedish winter is shot in grey, flat light by Hoyte van Hoytema, turning the courtyard between the apartment blocks into a space as cold and isolated as the children themselves.
Kåre Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson play Oskar and Eli with a stillness that makes the violence around them land harder. The film treats bullying and bloodshed as two sides of the same ordinary cruelty, and finds real tenderness in the bond between these two outsiders in a world that offers them nothing.
