Border

Border (2018)

In this story by the author of Let the Right One In, a customs officer can smell guilt on travelers before they know they carry it. She has never been wrong. A man crosses her checkpoint and her nose tells her something is off, but not what, and not why she suddenly feels less alone than she has in her entire life.

BORDER (2018), released as Gräns, follows Tina, a border guard whose heightened senses have made her a legend at her post.

Eva Melander plays Trina, unrecognizable under prosthetics. Eero Milonoff plays Vore, the stranger whose scent she cannot categorize.Ali Abbasi directs from a script he wrote with novelist John Ajvide Lindqvist and Isabella Eklöf.

What begins as a procedural about smuggling turns into something else entirely, a story about Tina's own body and ancestry, and what she owes to a world that has only ever called her ugly. The Denmark-Sweden co-production refuses easy categories of monster and human, guilt and innocence.

It is a fairy tale told with the patience of a police drama, and it does not flinch from where that patience leads.

      1. Dave Rimnottellin nah, it’s all in foreign. I threw it on but I can’t tolerate subtitles. I’m usually reading something on my phone. Plus they’re ugly.

When they drop a dub I’ll check it out.

        I’ll go ask ChatGPT.

      1. Amanda Astrid Kressin Just kidding, of course you are right, there are many books and stories that are better examples of similar themes. You could argue “Let the right one in” is a better example (Swedish original, please :D)

      2. Michael Vidler have you read Border? I didn’t realize it is a book but I really like the other works by this author. Both the book Perfume and the movie are wonderful but just different enough that I think they accomplished different things

      3. Amanda Astrid Kressin Thanks for the heads up 😀 “Let the right one in” (original) is one of my favourite films. I wasn’t aware it was based on a book, nor that the author had other works to his name. I will look it up. I’m sure you’re right that “Perfume” and “Border” address different things, though I need to see Border. It does look good. And find the story it is based on to read it 😀 Again, thanks 😀 I first read “Perfume” 40 years ago and was blown away by it, I should read more Suskind as well.

  1. I did not know about this movie before this post. But I could have sworn the man in the first picture is Eero Milonoff. And bob’s yer uncle, that’s him. He has such depth and strength in expression that it’s easy to spot. Brilliant.

  2. Ce film est juste magnifique mais malheureusement peu connu. Il ne ressemble à aucun autre, j’aime le faire regarder à des personnes sans leur dire de quoi ça parle mais juste de me faire confiance. L’étonnement est assuré.
