An actress stops speaking mid-performance and never explains why. She is not mute, not ill. She has simply decided that silence is truer than anything she could say.
PERSONA (1966) tells us the role was Electra, and it pairs that actress, Elisabet Vogler, played by Liv Ullmann, with her nurse Alma, played by Bibi Andersson, at a doctor’s summer house on the Baltic coast. Alma talks to fill the silence, confesses her secrets, and slowly comes apart as the line between caretaker and patient dissolves.
Ingmar Bergman wrote the script in roughly two weeks from a hospital bed and also produced and directed. His original title was Kinematografi, which tells you how much the film’s real subject was always itself. The opening montage is a barrage of rupture: a projector lamp flaring, a nail driven through a hand, a boy reaching toward a blurred image of two women.
Sven Nykvist shot it in stark black and white that turns the women’s faces into landscapes. At one famous point their features merge into a single composite image, as if the film itself can no longer tell them apart. Midway through, after Alma’s confrontation, the image stutters and tears, the film appears to burn through, and the prologue’s imagery floods back before the picture reassembles itself. It closes on the crew filming Elisabet and the projector shutting down.
It runs 84 minutes but has been picked apart by critics and scholars for decades, less a story than an experience of identity under pressure. Few films have made silence feel so dangerous.

The lighting in this film warms my soul.
I taught this extraordinary film for twenty years. I think it’s in the top five movies of all time, and am shocked at how rarely it appears in the lists of greatest films.
The greatest film and absolutely masterwork!!!!!
