Stuck on You!

Stuck on You! (1982)

Personal Note: Your humble host worked on this film as a teenager, painting caveman clubs on the roof of the Troma building. He still has the script in his garage - with original title "Split!"

@Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz had built Troma on sex comedies. Squeeze Play! (1979) was a surprise hit that gave them the financial stability to buy the legendary Troma Building on Ninth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen - the Manhattan headquarters that defined the company's identity for decades. Waitress! followed.

STUCK ON YOU! (1982) was third in the series, and Kaufman has said it's his favorite of the lot - which is interesting, because it's also the one that most resembles an actual film.

Estranged couple Bill and Carol are locked in a palimony suit before Judge Gabriel, played by the legendary stand-up comedian Professor Irwin Corey, who turns out to be the actual angel Gabriel, despatched from on high to save their relationship. To do this he takes them back through history to observe how couples throughout the ages - Adam and Eve, Queen Isabella and Columbus, King Arthur and Guinevere - have faced exactly the same problems.

According to some sources, the film was inspired by the writings of Tom Lehrer and Stan Freberg, which explains a lot about its sensibility and nothing about the chicken scene. Kaufman directed under his pseudonym Samuel Weil, as he did on most of the early Troma comedies.

Two years later, Troma discovered toxic waste and never looked back. But this - lighter, sexier, genuinely funny in places, and built around two leads with actual chemistry - represents the road not taken.
