The zombie apocalypse ain’t what it used to be.
In this episode of Film on the Fringe, Dr. Atom takes us on an expansive journey through the evolution of the undead—from Haitian voodoo to post-pandemic paranoia. We begin with The Last of Us, where zombies aren’t reanimated corpses but victims of a very real fungus, Cordyceps. This biologically grounded horror story marks the latest twist in a myth that’s always adapted to reflect society’s deepest anxieties—from contagion to climate collapse.
But to understand today’s infected, we have to start with 1932’s White Zombie. We examine its portrayal of zombification as labor exploitation and how it borrowed (and distorted) Haitian beliefs rooted in slavery, voodoo, and the fear of losing one’s soul.
From there, we follow the undead as they mutate through Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, George Romero’s genre-defining Night of the Living Dead, and international reinventions like Train to Busan, Shaun of the Dead, and The Girl with All the Gifts. Along the way, we encounter talking corpses, zombie mall shoppers, punk rock ghouls, and even self-aware undead communities in Daryl Gregory’s Raising Stony Mayhall.
Whether they shuffle, sprint, or sing, zombies are never just monsters. They’re mirrors—reflecting race, class, consumerism, pandemic anxiety, and the slow erosion of our sense of self. As the zombie mutates, so do we.
