Long before Gremlins, Joe Dante made a movie so tangled in other people's copyrights that he could never legally sell it. For decades, the only way to see it was to be in the room with Dante himself standing beside the projector.
THE MOVIE ORGY (1968) is one huge collage of found footage, B-movies, cartoons, TV commercials, and newsreels of atom-bomb tests. At its longest it ran seven and a half hours. It was the YouTube supercut forty years before YouTube.
Through the late 1960s and 1970s The Movie Orgy toured college campuses - sponsored, improbably, by Schlitz beer. It played less like a film screening than an all-night happening.
Dante and his co-conspirator Jon Davison (who later produced Robocop) would run it on dual projectors, taking cues from the crowd, never showing the same version twice. A giant-monster clip would slam into a laxative ad would slam into Richard Nixon, and a room full of students would howl until dawn.

One of the very first Movie Orgies was held at the University of Illinois in Urbana, and they returned for at least one encore. I talk about it a bit here: https://www.micro-film-magazine.com/cublog/?p=15415
I’ve had this on VHS tape from a long time ago. Can’t remember where I got it from. The picture quality wasn’t that good and never watched the entire thing but kept the tape.
And how is it? Sounds fun.
Sounds like Collide-o-scope, a fairly long running show at Re-Bar in Seattle
i must have been conceived when it was on campus’s
I was just reading about this the other day. It might be fun to watch. Once.
Looks Awesome
I got to see Joe show it when he programmed a few weeks at New Beverly about 20 years ago. John Landis was in the audience, throwing Joe great questions to lead to this or that story.
There’s a 5-hour cut available at the Internet Archive.

What a thing to have experienced live…it would almost be worth being old enough to have attended 😆
The 4 and a half hour version aired on TCM a few months ago.
