A centuries-old alien in the body of a house cat is stranded on Earth, hunting for the weapon that will allow him to destroy an ancient enemy and return home.
THE CAT (1992), known in Cantonese as Wai Si Lei Ji Lo Mau, adapts Wisely’s Old Cat, one of Ni Kuang’s Wisely science fiction novels, with Ni Kuang himself appearing onscreen as Mr. Chen.
Waise Lee plays Wisely, an adventure novelist who becomes obsessed with a strange girl (Gloria Yip), her elderly guardian, and their cat General after a string of bizarre deaths. The trio are extraterrestrials pursuing a fungal monster that can possess human bodies, and when it takes over police inspector Wang (Phillip Kwok), Wisely finds himself caught in the middle of an interstellar war.
Director Lam Ngai Kai throws together practical creature effects, gunfights, and body horror with gleeful disregard for restraint, producing something that plays like a Hong Kong answer to John Carpenter's The Thing by way of a ’70s live-action Disney premise, capped by a cat-versus-dog junkyard brawl that has to be seen to be believed. Christine Ng and Lawrence Lau round out a cast that treats the absurd plot with total commitment.

Ridley McIntyre “that darned cat!”
This sounds amazing?!?! 🐈
Jim Delaney It’s insane. I loved it – saw it at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema last year, then bought it on Blu-ray.
The actress is really cute – looks like an Asian Jennifer Connelly.
Nikita Malliarakis She is very cute.
The Wisely movies are a mess. Jet Li doing Walter Mitty daydreams in one, another guy doing Indiana Jones alien artifact hunting in another and then theres this….
I wrote about this on Adams Movie Asylum
Saw this off a random movie group suggestion then was lucky enough to see it again at Alamo Draft House. Took my friends in blind. Also loved the asian cat punk band short they showed before it. Not sure what it was for but I loved it.
The first time I watched it, at one point we restarted at the beginning. The first 30 minutes didn’t make much sense until some explanations later. But the best Dog vs Cat fight scene! It’s several minutes long.
I want to see that now.
Nam Nai Choi au top ! Cray, funny and gory !
I’ll check it out this weekend.
