A woman studying black magic encounters an old witch who teaches her to transform into a floating, bloodsucking head with trailing organs.

MYSTICS IN BALI (1981), also known as Leák, follows Cathy Kean, an American researcher in Indonesia who seeks out a local sorceress to learn the secrets of leak magic. The old woman agrees to teach her, but the price of that knowledge is her own body, which she loses control of as the transformation takes hold.

Directed by H. Tjut Djalil, the film draws on Balinese folklore surrounding the leak, a figure whose head and entrails detach from the body and drift through the dark in search of victims. Ilona Agathe Bastian plays Cathy, with Sofia W.D. and Debbie Cynthia Dewi as the old and young versions of the Leak Queen who guide and threaten her in turn.

The film never received a theatrical release in Indonesia itself, reportedly due to its content, but it found an afterlife abroad as a cult object, passed around for its genuinely strange, handmade practical effects and its willingness to follow regional folklore into places few other horror films had gone.
