It finally got made in 1999, in the months right after Columbine, when a violent movie about a murderous teenager was the last thing most studios wanted to fund.
One financier after another called the project too dark and too feminist. It was Telefilm Canada, along with a stack of government film agencies, that finally provided the money.
The Toronto Star stirred up controversy when it announced that Telefilm was putting public money into a "teen slasher movie," linking the film to recent school shootings in the US and Canada.
In John Fawcett's GINGER SNAPS (2000), two outcast sisters in a bland suburb called Bailey Downs are bound by a death pact - until Ginger is bitten and starts to change. The conceit, of course, is lycanthropy as metaphor for adolescence.
The casting took six months and turned up no one until Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins auditioned on the same day. The two actors had been born in the same hospital. They had gone to the same preschool, the same schools, the same Vancouver agency.
Screenwriter Karen Walton, who was not directly involved with the casting, looked at the tapes and said they were exactly the girls she had imagined.
Bailey Downs is a play on Bonnie Doon, a real neighborhood where Walton grew up. It is also the name of a neighborhood in Orphan Black, which was created by the same team.

I love “Ginger Snaps”. Even more so all the movies of Katharine Isabelle.
Lycanthropy seemed to be a figurative play on one of the characters’ visible autism lol 😂😂😂
One of my ALL TIME favorites
Is she the girl from the Titanic?
Siegfred Santillan Nope, but I knew her from Heartland, if you’ve ever watched that show.
Great little flick.
“Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed” featured Tatiana Maslany as “Ghost” whom she played as much younger than her actual age. Later, she would play “Alison Hendrix”, resident of Bailey Downs, as mentioned above.
Scott Brown I got to see Tatiana Maslany in Grey House on Broadway a couple of years ago. Really enjoyed that.
Scott Brown Tatiana Maslany is an absolutely brilliant actress.
Amazing film.
I don’t know if this was intentional or not. But someone once pointed out that Bailey Downs combines the last names of the two main characters from The Craft: Sarah Bailey and Nancy Downs. Again, could be a coincidence, but the movies were made just a few years apart and have similar vibes.
Both Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins appeared on DaVinci’s Inquest, one of the best TV shows ever produced.
I Love these Movies
Terrific film
Count me another fan.
An episode of Buffy, “Ear Shot” was supposed to run the very next week. It was pulled, and it did run near the end of that season.
Love these movies.

I was just on a podcast about this movie. Perhaps that’s why Facebook showed me this.
“Wicked”
LOVE all 3 of these movies.
Love this movie… all of the the movies.
Once watched an interview about the third one with Katherine saying ‘and for some reason we’re back in time, but hey we’re making a movie!’ ❤️
Both of these actresses played on both the X-Files and Supernatural (separately). Emily was so hilarious as Becky, it was so unlike her Ginger Snaps character.
Loved it
Bailey downs was also the town in the Christmas Horror Story anthology starring William Shatner.
I love ginger snaps ❤️
Love love love the ginger snap movies.
I would say that lycanthrope is a great metaphor for puberty and the following teen years.
Emily Perkins is a favorite of mine.
