For a brief and silly stretch of the early 1980s, the movies threw themselves at you. You sat in a packed theater in cardboard glasses, and things leapt off the screen and into your lap.
Spears. Snakes. Flaming arrows. Jaws did it. Friday the 13th did it. Amityville did it.
And it all traces back to one film few expected to matter. COMIN' AT YA! (1981) was a spaghetti western shot in the Spanish desert, dressed up as the American frontier. It quickly made its two and a half million dollar budget back and ultimately took in about twelve million in the United States.
Its distributor, Filmways Pictures, had only ordered 90,000 pairs of 3D glasses for a limited two-city launch. Because demand exploded instantly - likened at the time to "Star Wars business" - Filmways had to rush-order 5 million more pairs of glasses.
Studios noticed. By the end of the next year the trade papers counted sixty 3D projects in the works.
Tony Anthony wrote, produced, and starred in it, and to secure a wide release he designed a cheap 3D projection lens himself. Long after the 3D boom collapsed, Anthony was still refining optics, and he turned that obsession into a company building equipment for eye surgeons.
And as I type this out I realize the man's name is Anthony Anthony.

Tony Anthony made some entertaining nonsense in his time.
Is that Victoria Abril?
Charley Pace it is!
Anywhere But Hollywood I’m a huge fan. You have sold this movie to me 🎞️✊
Don’t forget Blindman, also featuring Ringo Starr.
Robert Talbott excellent and very funny movie
“I want my 50 women”
Robert Talbott my favorite of Anthony’s for sure!
Dumb movie, but, it was the first time I saw 3-D that actually worked well. A lot of fun at the time!
Don’t forget Treasure of the Four Crowns.
Anthony Margheriti RULES!!
Robb Pollock I wish he would have made 3D movies.😊 All his work would have been awesome in 3D 😎
I remember Jaw 3D
Do mine eyes decieve me? Is this the same movie in 3D for FREE on streaming? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoMwAL5r7lc
And her it is without the 3D effect (also for FREE) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgOiJE1kQBo
I have this in 3D Blu-ray. It’s in my queue to watch soon.
Not a great film and the muddy 3D effects didn’t help it.
The Stranger. I met him once. He considered himself a pioneer filmmaker.
comes back around about every 30 years.
This came to the Westend theatre in Christchurch, New Zealand. In the movie, a little girl blows bubbles toward cam and I distinctly remember audience members reaching out to pop them!
I saw the rerelease of THE HOUSE OF WAX in Times Sq. The glasses they handed out had black & white frames with the COMIN’ AT YA! logo on the side.
Tony Anthony, real name Tony Petitto, born in West Virginia, USA
Andy Warhols Frankenstein and Dracula were shown in this era. Though they were considerably more “sexy” and gorey.
I remember trying to see that movie rather vividly, because the terrible 3D gave me such a headache so fast, I was back in the lobby asking for a refund within five minutes. Maybe the projectionist had made a technical error, I don’t know.
