Amer (2009)

It barely bothers with dialogue. Every desire, every terror, every flicker of fantasy arrives through color, texture, and sound, a film assembled less like a story than a nervous system.

AMER (2009) splits the story of Ana into three movements:

As a child, played by Cassandra Forêt, she wanders an isolated villa, morbidly fascinated by the corpse of her grandfather.

As a teenager, Charlotte Eugène Guibeaud's Ana discovers that her body has become a site of power and danger, watched by strangers, defined by eyes she cannot control.

As an adult, Marie Bos returns to the same decaying house, and finds that the ghosts of touch and violence never really left.

Directors Cattet and Forzani crafted Amer as a tribute to Italian giallo, but they strip away the usual plot mechanics. What remains is pure sensation: the rasp of fabric, the glint of a straight razor, the suffocating heat of a hallway.

Sound design does as much storytelling as any image, turning breath and footsteps into instruments of dread. The soundtrack consists largely of vintage giallo and Italian genre scores by Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, and Stelvio Cipriani.
