The tagline is a small work of genius: "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, you can't get to it."

By 1980, the Jaws imitators had picked the ocean clean. Killer whales, killer barracuda, killer piranha, the water was crowded with knockoffs. Blood Beach found the one stretch nobody had thought to colonize: the sand itself.

Something lives under a Los Angeles beach, and it pulls people straight down, mid-stroll, mid-sunbathe, often in broad daylight with horrified witnesses standing feet away. No fin, no warning, just a scream and a patch of disturbed sand where a person used to be.

The case falls to two tired cops played by John Saxon and Burt Young, and watching those two grumble their way through a creature feature is most of the fun. Young plays it like he wandered off the set of a Rocky sequel and never found his way back.

BLOOD BEACH (1980) exists in at least two cuts. A German version includes a few seconds of additional gore cut for the US market. Some sources indicate an Asian version that adds a spaceship that lands and seeds the beach with the creatures. (Edit: I have not been able to substantiate this second assertion.)

The film was produced by Sir Run Run Shaw, the Hong Kong mogul who, as Shaw Brothers co-founder, was behind decades of kung fu cinema.
