A British censor warned Hammer that a lesbian drama had already lost five minutes of footage to his office, and that this one would get the same treatment. Hammer wrote back that the lesbianism had been present in the source material for nearly a century. The censor backed down.
That exchange cleared the way for THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970), adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla and made as a co-production between Hammer and American International Pictures, who wanted a vampire film that could use the loosening censorship rules to push further into explicit territory than the studio had gone before.
Ingrid Pitt plays Mircalla Karnstein, a vampire active in Styria years after Baron Hartog, played by Douglas Wilmer, destroyed her family's tomb and drove stakes through their hearts. She moves through the households of the region under assumed names, Marcilla and Carmilla, targeting young women, with Peter Cushing as General von Spielsdorf leading the hunt against her.
Roy Ward Baker directs with Moray Grant's cinematography, in a film that recast how far British horror could go on screen.
