Roadgames

Roadgames (1981)

Share

A truck driver crosses the Australian outback with only a dingo for company, making up stories about the cars he passes to stay sane. Then one of his stories turns out to be true.

ROADGAMES (1981) stars Stacy Keach as Pat Quid, hauling a load of pork from Melbourne to Perth with his dingo, Boswell, riding beside him. He becomes convinced that a fellow driver on the same stretch of highway is a killer murdering women along the road. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Hitch, a hitchhiker who climbs into his cab and gets pulled into his suspicions, until the police begin to suspect Quid himself.

Richard Franklin directed from a script by Everett De Roche that retools Hitchcock's Rear Window into a chase down one of the most isolated roads on earth. Vincent Monton's cinematography makes the desert feel both vast and closed in, and Brian May's score (the Australian composer, not the Queen guitarist) keeps the tension running at highway speed.

Roadgames remains one of the sharpest Hitchcock homages to come out of the Australian film industry's boom years.
