Norway licenses every bear kill. So when dead bears start turning up that no licensed hunter claims, a group of film students goes looking for the poacher, and finds a state secret instead.

The students starts trailing a suspected illegal poacher, a haggard man who works alone and refuses interviews. They follow him into the woods at night. What they find is not a poacher's camp, but proof of a state secret that Norway's government has spent decades containing.

TROLLJEGEREN (2010), released internationally as TROLL HUNTER, follows Hans, played by Otto Jespersen, a weary civil servant whose actual job is hunting trolls under a covert government program called the Troll Security Service. He is tired, underpaid, and just... done. So he lets the students film everything.

Director André Øvredal shot the film as found footage, using Norway's own folklore, the three-headed trolls, the sensitivity to sunlight, the appetite for Christian blood, and staged it against the country's real fjords, tunnels, and power lines. The bureaucracy of monster containment gets as much screen time as the monsters themselves, government cover teams, cover stories about bears, budget constraints.

It became one of Norway's most successful genre exports, a monster movie that plays like a nature documentary crossed with a workplace complaint.
