Haunted (1995)
Its London premiere was attended by Princess Diana. In the United States it went straight to video.
HAUNTED (1995) is an adaptation of James Herbert's 1988 novel, set in 1928 England, about a professional debunker of spiritualists who is invited to a Sussex country estate to prove to an elderly nanny that she is not seeing ghosts.
He arrives. He meets Christina Mariell, played by Beckinsale with the full deployment of what Variety called "both physical looks and verbal poise." He spends a good deal of time not quite getting to the point. Then the ending arrives and the film becomes something much more interesting.
Haunted has a left-field twist that lands with enough weight to partially redeem the slow burn that precedes it.
The cast included Aidan Quinn, Kate Beckinsale in one of her first roles, Anthony Andrews, Anna Massey, and John Gielgud in one of his last.
Director Lewis Gilbert had previously made You Only Live Twice and Moonraker. The executive producer was Francis Ford Coppola, via American Zoetrope.
Variety described the whole enterprise as "a jazzed-up British programmer of the kind that companies like Amicus used to crank out in the sixties."
