ENTER THE VOID (2009) is Gaspar Noé's attempt to film death from the inside. After Oscar dies, his spirit drifts over the neon city, hovering above the people he left behind and slipping back through his life, his parents, his sister, the promise they made never to leave each other, all of it pulling him toward something like rebirth.

Early on, a friend reads Oscar passages from the Tibetan Book of the Dead: when you die, your life flashes before you, your spirit wanders among the living, then it is reborn. The film becomes that book, stage by stage.

Noé called it a psychedelic melodrama. Some walked out. Others called it one of the most astonishing things they had ever seen. Almost no one felt nothing.

Enter the Void secured a €12.38 million budget fueled by the success of his previous film, Irréversible. It was an international co-production spearheaded by Fidélité Films and Wild Bunch - which financed roughly 70% of the budget - alongside Noé's own company Les Cinémas de la Zone, visual effects studio BUF Compagnie, Germany's Essential Filmproduktion, and Italy's BIM Distribuzione. Distribution was heavily localized; Wild Bunch Distribution managed the theatrical releases in France and Germany, BIM Distribuzione covered Italy, and IFC Films handled its distribution in North America.
