Long before Gremlins, Joe Dante made a movie so tangled in other people's copyrights that he could never legally sell it. For decades, the only way to see it was to be in the room with Dante himself standing beside the projector.

THE MOVIE ORGY (1968) is one huge collage of found footage, B-movies, cartoons, TV commercials, and newsreels of atom-bomb tests. At its longest it ran seven and a half hours. It was the YouTube supercut forty years before YouTube.

Through the late 1960s and 1970s The Movie Orgy toured college campuses - sponsored, improbably, by Schlitz beer. It played less like a film screening than an all-night happening.

Dante and his co-conspirator Jon Davison (who later produced Robocop) would run it on dual projectors, taking cues from the crowd, never showing the same version twice. A giant-monster clip would slam into a laxative ad would slam into Richard Nixon, and a room full of students would howl until dawn.
