Hugh Everett III proposed the theory that every quantum event causes the universe to branch into a parallel reality. His son Mark leads the band Eels.

Mark Oliver Everett grew up in the same house as the genius who sat at the dining room table "jotting down crazy notations night after night." They barely spoke.

Hugh Everett was a distant and largely absent presence in his own family. He drank heavily and died of a heart attack in 1982 at the age of 51. He had requested that his remains be thrown in the trash. His wife complied.

PARALLEL WORLDS, PARALLEL LIVES (2007) follows Mark as he travels across America meeting his father's former colleagues, classmates, and friends, taking a crash course in quantum mechanics from physicists who finally take his father's work seriously. And trying to understand a man he never really knew.

During Eels' 2008 world tour, Mark screened it before every concert as the support act. The film won the BAFTA for Best Specialist Factual Programme and the Royal Television Society Award.

In Hugh Everett's theory, every possible version of events occurs in some parallel universe. Somewhere Hugh Everett is alive. Somewhere he knew his son.
